Methyl B12 – Serena Coan Bsc, DipION, CNHC

B12Methyl B12 Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin, meaning it is regularly excreted from the body in urine and requires a regular intake through diet or supplements. Vitamin B12 plays vital roles in the human body, contributing to:

  • Normal functioning of the nervous system

  • Normal energy-yielding metabolism

  • Normal immune function

  • Reduced tiredness

  • Normal red blood cell formation

  • Healthy nails, skin and hair

Vitamin B12 deficiency is often shown by extreme tiredness, irritability, mouth ulcers, pins and needles and more. Those following a vegetarian or vegan diet, in particular, are most likely to be deficient in this vitamin as it is primarily found in animal products such as dairy and meat. Supplemental vitamin B12 can be found in many forms methylcobalamin, adenosylcobalamin, cyanocobalamin and hydroxocobalamin. Methylcobalamin is known as the body ready, active form of vitamin B12. While these other structures can be converted into the active form, not every body is equally capable of converting it efficiently, leading to an increased risk of developing a deficiency.
