Love it or loathe it, milk and other dairy products have received some good and bad press over time, quite possibly due to the amount of additives that can be used in their manufacture.
It’s easy to see why many people look for organic alternatives to milk and products such as soy milk or almond milk to use in their day to day lives, which can be easier to digest and less likely to cause allergic reaction.
Despite the fact that milk starts off as a natural product, used by cows to feed their calves, it’s often the conditions that the cows are kept in, the food they are fed and the way the milk is dealt with afterwards that comes under scrutiny in the press. This product is ideal for people looking to increase the protein in their diet.
The Organic Protein Company was formed when its owner, Daniel, noticed a lack of organic whey protein powder on the market.
The only source of organic whey protein had been in the USA, but an incompatibility between EU and USA organic rules made it difficult to bring the product to the UK.
He looked to offer a source of whey protein that was less chemically enhanced than the products already available and to produce it in the most natural, environmentally friendly way possible.
Organic Whey Protein
Whey protein can be separated from the casein in milk or formed as a by-product of cheese making.
It is considered a complete protein and contains all nine essential amino acids.
The idea of organic whey protein is that it only uses milk from grass fed cows, which contains no additives, with the cows being kept away from artificial fertilisers, pesticides, hormones and GM feed.
After eventually managing to ship the product from the US, the Organic Protein Company came across an organic dairy group along the Schleswig-Holstein Cheese Route in Northern Germany who began producing their own version, giving a gentler low temperature filtration process and a source of protein of an even higher quality than originally envisaged.
The Organic Protein Company now boasts a neutral flavour and creamy texture to its organic whey protein which makes it versatile to use in smoothies or home baking, while it has a flavour that makes it pleasant to drink, even with water.
What’s so different about Organic Whey Protein?
If you’re wondering what’s so different from whey protein, then, as well as the fact that it contains less additives, with an assurance that it comes from grass fed cows in unpolluted pastures, it is also GM free, gluten free, lower in fat and higher in Omega 3 fatty acids.
Once the organic milk is separated into whey and curds, the whey is also filtered twice, rather than only the one time for standard whey protein. This leads to gentler separation, with most of the fat and lactose removed and high quality protein and calcium retained.
In a similar way to non organic whey protein, it also gives an abundance of essential amino acids and branched chain amino acids, making it a perfect protein source. The fact that it’s slightly gentler on the digestive system, also makes it easier for most bodies to tolerate.
