Fish oil is a form of fatty acid which is derived from the tissues of oily fish. It contains omega-3 fatty acids, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), both of which provide the following health benefits:
DHA and EPA contribute to:
- the maintenance of normal blood triglyceride levels and of normal blood pressure
- the normal function of the heart
DHA also contributes to:
- the maintenance of normal brain function
- normal vision
- maternal intake of DHA contributes to the normal brain development of the fetus and breast fed infants
Note: Individuals who consume a high amount of fatty fish in their diet tend not to need to supplement with fish oil capsules as much or as often.
